About the Database

Also in the Database by Army, are 'Out Method Analysis' graphs that plot by 'out' method the number of soldiers leaving the service by length of duty. Below is the 'Dying by Disease by Length of Service in Days' graph for the Union Army.

The chart above shows that during a soldier's first 5 or 6 months of service he was especially vulnerable to dying by disease. What was happening and why was it happening? Which regiments suffered the most and why? What can we learn from the 'Regimental Casualty Analysis' and the 'Regimental Assignment' charts to help explain this problem? These are some of the ways the Database can help with research.

Similar charts in the Database for other exit methods including 'killed', 'desertion', and 'discharge for disability' raise additional research topics such as the value of prior military experience.
