About the Database

The final part of the tour is a review of the 'Regimental Experience' graph - a timeline representation of a regiment's total military experience based on the sum of each soldier's regimental experience. The 'Regimental Experience' graph along with its companion charts, 'Casualty Analysis', 'Regimental Assignments', and 'Roster', tell a regiment's story as well as aid in comparisons of the experiences of smaller, lesser known regiments with larger (typically infantry) regiments.

The 'Regimental Experience' graph plots three variables (service time, number of men, and combat experience) at the end of each month during the regiment's existence. On the next pages we will explain what each variable is and how we derive them and then we will examine each variable for the Georgia 4th Infantry. When taken individually each variable tells only part of the story. However, when combined and used with the Regimental Casualty, Assignments, and Roster charts you can begin to understand the sacrifices the men of the Georgia 4th Infantry made.
